Mach V @ Back To Mine, 20080812

Ok, so festival No.3 – Big Chill Festival at Eastnor Castle – is now out of the way, and I’m half way through the festival line up for the year. Playing at the Big Chill has always been a highlight and without their support I doubt I would’ve continued DJing for so long, or had the career that I’ve had. The majority of my friends have all come about because of The Big Chill, so the emotional ties are stronger with The Big Chill than any other organisation. No other organisation has had such a profound effect on me, and that effect will last for many years to come.

Earlier this year Chillfest, the company behind The Big Chill, went into liquidation and it was looking decidedly dodgy for their future. In stepped Festival Republic (the organisation behind, Leeds, V, Reading, Latitude, The Electric Picnic and Glastonbury to name but a few) and they bought the brand, keeping on creative director Katrina Larkin. With such a corporate company stepping in to save it from dying two things were obvious:

1) The Big Chill wouldn’t die, it would be around for a long while yet
2) It would be radically different from previous incarnations.

So it was with a curious and skeptical eye and ear that I attended this year. Sadly, my role as a Compere had vanished so I’d ingratiated myself into the Big Chill Radio crew, but I was also booked as a DJ in one of the cocktail bars – The Monkey Shoulder Treehouse (see pic. thanks to Debbie Keen). The following text is what I posted on the Big Chill Forum as part of the feedback about peoples experiences ( http://forum.bigchill.net/index.php?/topic/698769-big-chill-2010/page__v... ) :

On the whole: Not bad. I had a good time.

The Dogs 2 - Hex The Dex Live 3pm Apr 18th 2010

We really have gone to The Dogs in this part 2 Hex show. It contains a massive error. It has offensive and unnecessary Brian Blessed bum talk. And lest you think that Tom Baker’s anus goes unimagined then no, there it is. All that and Gordon Brown’s fun-string, Sarah Brown’s secret garden and a horrific chainsaw accident. DO NOT LISTEN TO THIS. EVER.

Echaskech Multi Touch Blog #4 - Layered Instruments

Here I am showing a few instruments, or modes, overlayed. Most instruments are designed to simply make sound when I interact, but others are self generative (like the bouncing balls) so that aspect of them persists between modes. I haven't really payed much attention to musical key or the 'edges' of the sounds, so its a bit of a cacophony I'm afraid, but I wanted to play with it again and thought i may as well blog it. Each time I do this I go away and make improvements, so perhaps itll be better next time! I really must work out how to switch of auto focus on my camera tho!

Bumschlaken - Hex The Dex - May 2010

Who, tell me, who? Just who, would sand a monkey for fun. And I don't mean throw sand in the monkeys face, though that would be bad enough. No. Who would take some sandpaper, starting with a course grain, and set about a blameless simian with the intention of giving it him lovely smooth finish? Who? Only someone extremely bored, that's who. Don't let it be you. Listen to this megabig-double-size show forthwith. WARNING: Actual show may appear shorter due to time flying when you're having fun. Not a guaranteed cure for monkey sanding syndrome. Contains nuts. People with bladder weakness should probably be ashamed of themselves.

The Dogs - Hex The Dex Live 3pm Apr 18th 2010

Like the man with the world record for having the highest sperm count, this show is creaking at the seams and begging to be released. Its dog content is higher than any previous Hex, a stunning 80 percent. The Robert Mugabe count is off the scale, and if you like tedious towel-folding robots, then boy is this the podcast for you.

Multi Touch Instrument Blog#3: First demonstration with sound

So I have written a few 'instruments' but this one is a nice basic one we were hoping to play on stage some time soon. It has basic x-y control for reverb and filter, but also distance between primary and secondary touch is delay length and angle between the 2 touches is delay wetness.

We had it ready and set up to play at last weeks Digital City party. But WOE! however much testing and prep you do before-hand something has to come along and take a long hot piss on your metaphorical bonfire. This time it was in the form of a bizarre midi glitch that knocked out Andys PC. Not even the PC thats running it! So, in order to do the show we had to ditch the new toy and play. And what a gig it was....sweet, sweet Digital City. GOOD party.

Again we tried for Peepshow, having debugged the problem. Against all odds, having to share a somewhat cramped stage with Hextatic and Jon Hopkins, we managed to get it working again, and despite having Jon in the line of sight of the projector we even got it calibrated and ready to go. Then another weird bug, this time with the CCV/camera driver software. CRASH! so we had to forget about it again. We are edging closer and closer but still the cigar has not been presented to me, or even purchased in preparation. I looked jealously at Jons rugged, and effective triple Kaoss pad setup and wondered if there was any point.

Any more name ideas? So far we have...
